The End of the World

I open my eyes to find
A new world

Completely, utterly,
Impossibly
It must be new
For I refuse to believe
That this
Is the world I know (it can’t be, it can’t)

The spiders are crawling
Waiting for their red
Blood red lilies
Blooming in the smoky light
Watching
Red eyes, constantly (multiply by 8, it’s too much)

The edges are rough
Painted crimson with the
Liquid of life
And the tears
Of the dying
Crying
Disappearing sun
Is this what we
Humans
Have become?

More edges, now these
Straight, smooth, sharp
Lines that rise
Up
   Up
      Up
And the magnificent
The glorious, the silent
The castle that looms
Holds the throne of
Oppressive kings

Shadows growing, the shadows
Pouring, the shadows
Twisting and turning and
Consuming (are they alive? No no no)

There is no
Escape
Not when the darkness
The dark, the monsters
They see it
All (run, just run, but you cannot leave)

No light shines in the
Darkness, distance
But the lanterns (different, unnatural)
Drifting and drifting and drifting
On this sluggish river of
Red (it’s not that, it can’t be)
A different world, perhaps?
A different time, perhaps?

The fallen lie on the ground
Stars, they
Used to shine so bright
Shrouded in the mist
Ashy gray and choke
Full of dust
Is this mist? Or just
Filth

Can you hear it?
Can you feel
It
It, it, it
It is an it (because it cannot be living)

No there is
Nothing
To hear, to feel
Not the
Pulse
Beat
Life
Of jagged edges and
Shadows
Monsters that are not (no, never)
Of our own
Creation

The sun still dies
The castle still rises
The stars still fall
And the flowers
Red like the sun
Like the
Blood
Grow forever
And ever and ever

Their petals curl
Spread
Spiders, red spiders (they’re waiting, they’re watching, forever)
An army, a
Cemetery
A sea of red
But no
No
Everything here is a sea
Of ancient times

The spiders are still crawling
And they wait
Forever
In this sea of red
Their blood red lilies
Watching
Eight eyes, constantly (ignore, ignore, it’s still too much)

I open my eyes to find
The end
Of the world
